Membership is open to Organisations which have objects and or aims that are compatible with the aims of the Federation. The following categories of membership are defined in the Federation Constitution:
Full Membership, which is open to registered, patient-led, prostate cancer support charities.
Associate Membership, which is open to patient-led, prostate cancer support charities that are not registered, and support groups. Associate Members may be admitted to the category of Full Member at the discretion of the Trustees.
Organisation Membership, which is open to organisations, which are not necessarily patient-led but have a legitimate interest in prostate cancer and support the Objects of the Charity.
In addition, individuals who do not belong to a member charity, support group or organisation but who have had a long standing legitimate interest in prostate cancer and who support the Objects of the Charity may join as Honorary Members.
The implications of the categorisation above are amplified in the Federation Rules.
A patient-led support charity or group is one that has all of the following;
A membership of at least 25 individuals who have or have had prostate cancer, their partners, families and lay carers.
A policy of complete transparency whereby their governing document, accounts and proceedings are open to public scrutiny.
An elected managing committee, 75% of who are individuals as set out in (i) above and who have to stand for re-election at regular intervals.
Membership is currently (2008) free. However, the costs of running the Federation are not insignificant, and, following broad agreement of delegates who attended the Launch Event in April 2008, and as confirmed at the 'Promoting Patient Power' Workshop in October 2008, the Committee of Trustees are working on a proposal to be put to the 2009 Annual General Meeting to raise a membership levy equivalent to £1 per head based on the number of members each Member Organisation has.
